Sonny Hancock, Luke Colling and Lucas Searle with the English Schools Team Championship trophy
Bristol Grammar School (Avon) were crowned winners of the England Schools Team Championship on Wednesday, thanks to a combined 76 stableford points from Lucas Searle and Sonny Hancock.
The pair helped their school win the annual event, held this year on Woodhall Spa’s Bracken Course, as they held off the likes of Cardinal Vaughan (Middlesex), St Edmund’s College & Prep School (Hertfordshire), Trent College (Derbyshire) and Bottisham Village College (Cambridgeshire), who all came in with a combined 72 points.
Searle and Hancock came in with 38 points apiece, while teammate Colling's 32 points were discounted with the two best scores of three counting.
With 96 players competing at the home of England Golf, the individual competition was won by Amelie Browne (25 handicap). Browne finished in first place as she returned 39 points to fend off stiff competition from six other players who came in with 38 points.
Andre Bethapudi (7) of St Leonard’s Catholic School (Durham) finished second on countback with 38 points after shooting four birdies. In third place was Oliver Wong (17) of Chapel-en-le-Frith High School (Derbyshire), while Abigail Scott of Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School (Lincolnshire) came fourth.
Bristol Grammar’s Searle (38) and Hancock (23) finished fifth and sixth respectively while Ronnie Seagroatt (7) of St Edmund’s College & Prep School (Hertfordshire) also shot 38 points in seventh place, impressing with three birdies.
