Catherine Anderson (Liphook) enjoyed a remarkable win in her first ever national tournament – as she triumphed on the 19th hole of an enthralling English Super Senior Women’s Championship Final.
Despite being 2-down through 13 against Caroline Berry (Royal Liverpool), she battled back to win the next two to be level on the 16th tee.
The pair matched each other for the remaining three holes before two brilliant tee shots and approaches set up a putt-off on the 1st extra hole, with Berry’s 12-footer agonisingly cosying up by the hole, before Anderson rolled in a four-footer for birdie to lift the Ann Howard Trophy.
Having turned 60 in December, Anderson who beat Gill Hodgson and Katherine Russell on her way to the final, said: “It feels fabulous. I thought I was in for it as Caroline played beautifully and I just kept dragging her back. I’m so delighted and emotional. It is 100% my biggest win to date and I’ll remember it forever.
“I learnt to play golf with my father at St George’s Hill in Surrey in the 70s and sadly my mother passed and it all became tricky so I walked away from golf, got married, divorced, worked, children, no money! And about nine years ago I was chatting to Jenny Clink, a past England Golf President who is a great friend of my father’s, and she encouraged me to go to Liphook and get back into it – and the rest is history. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my journey back into golf.
“A few friends said to me after my captaincy at Liphook to enter the national event, so I thought I’d give it a go so, I’m delighted I did!
“I’m driving home tonight and my little Jack Russell will be delighted to see me and when I get to Liphook tomorrow I know there are big celebrations planned!” Check out the final results here.
