England Golf Men's Squad star George Whitehead captured the Spanish U18 Championship after a dramatic play-off victory in Seville.
The Hillside golfer defeated Norway's Mathias Aase on the first extra hole with a birdie after both players produced sensational final rounds of -7 (64) to finish tied on -20 for the tournament.
Whitehead, who improved his score every day with rounds of 69, 66, 65 and 64 on the par-71 layout at Zaudín Golf Club, had an opportunity to seal victory on the 72nd hole. In a tense finish on the final green, Whitehead could only watch as Aase holed a 30-foot birdie putt to draw level. Whitehead then narrowly missed his own putt to win the championship in regulation.
"It was a very solid week with four rounds in the 60s and to shoot -20 is pretty special really," said Whitehead. "I've felt good all week really, I just wanted to keep doing what I'm doing.
"Around the turn it was very close, I managed to pull away at -21, but unfortunately, I had to settle for a play-off after leading by two down the last, but it is what it is."
Despite the setback, Whitehead showed tremendous composure when it mattered most. Faced with a putt from a similar distance to Aase's effort on the first play-off hole, he confidently found the bottom of the cup to secure the title in front of his England teammates.
"It was pretty straight and around 24 feet," Whitehead added on the winning putt. "I thought 'I could win the Spanish Boys if I holed this putt' and I hit the perfect stroke and it trickled in."
The victory is the latest highlight in what has already been an exceptional season for Whitehead. Earlier this year, he claimed the Peter McEvoy Trophy before also securing the Malcolm Reid Salver, awarded to the player with the best combined score across the Peter McEvoy Trophy and Carris Trophy.
Whitehead has also enjoyed significant success in England colours. He was part of the England side that won the 2026 Girls' & Boys' Home Internationals and helped the national team secure a silver medal at the 2026 European Boys' Team Championship.
The Lancastrian joins Ben Bolton on the list of English winners of the championship. The Enville player lifted the title in 2024 and has since progressed to the England Men's National Squad, and this weekend helped GB&I win the Walker Cup for the first time in 11 years.
