England’s women were in fine form again this weekend as Ellie Monk won the Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open Championship, with Nellie Ong just two shots back of the winner.

The performances also helped England to win the International Team title at the event at Royal Troon.
“It’s amazing I can’t quite believe it,” said Monk (pictured above). “It’s a big achievement and an amazing honour to win on a course that will be hosting The Open this year. Royal Troon is intimidating if you’re not on your game, but it’s a great experience to win this and a lovely tournament to play,” added Monk, after impressing in front of the watching Curtis Cup captain Catriona Matthew.
Monk shot four birdies on a fantastic final day as she came in +2 overall, with Ong’s final-day score of -2 seeing her finish in 2nd place. Following her victory, Monk insisted she had to get back home to prep for an economics exam on Monday, adding: “The celebrations are on hold until Monday – after this it’s straight to the library!”
For Ong, it was a second consecutive week finishing in 2nd place, after she finished one shot shy of fellow England player Chloe Tarbard in the Scottish Girls’ Championship the previous weekend.
There was more to celebrate for England this weekend as Lottie Woad continued her tremendous form across the pond. After winning the Augusta National Women’s Amateur a fortnight ago, she played in her first ever major tournament at the Chevron Championship at The Club at Carlton Woods in Texas (18-21 April).
The 20-year-old did superbly to make the cut, and eventually finished alongside seasoned professionals Charley Hull and Georgia Hall in tied-23rd overall – a magnificent achievement in her first-ever major. The Farnham golfer bagged 17 birdies across her four days of action, finishing on -1 overall, just four shots back of the top-10 and 12 shots back of winner Nelly Korda.
Elsewhere, in Spain, England Women’s trio Amelia Wan, Isla McDonald-O’Brien and Sophia Fullbrook helped their country finish runners-up to Sweden in the 10-team European Nations Championship in Sotogrande. Amelia and Sophia finished +4 individually to both finish tied-5th out of the 31 players.
England Golf Women’s Performance Manager Becca Hembrough said: “It really has been a sensational start to the year. All of the players who have contributed to England’s success and who have won or been competing at the top of leaderboards should be very proud of themselves. Hopefully it will catapult us to more success throughout the rest of the season.”
England Men finished tied-7th out of the 21 countries competing at the European Nations Championship in Sotogrande thanks to Will Hopkins, Harley Smith, Kris Kim and Dylan Shaw-Radford. Will Hopkins’ impressive -2 over the course of the four days (17-20 April) saw him finish tied-3rd in the field out of the 90 players, just three shots back of the winner.
