5 Tips to Stay Healthy on the Course This Summer
Golf in the sunshine is a summer highlight — but staying healthy on the course is just as important as hitting a perfect drive. Here are five essential tips, each backed by real-world stats to help you stay sharp, safe, and swinging all season.
1. Stay Hydrated
Even mild dehydration affects energy, focus, and performance. In the 2022 UK heatwave, there were 2,803 excess deaths attributed to extreme heat, with older adults particularly vulnerable.
Tip: Drink water regularly — a few sips every hole — and avoid caffeine-heavy or sugary drinks that dehydrate. Try to steer clear of alcohol too…at least until the 19th hole.
2. Protect Yourself from the Sun
Four hours on an open fairway leaves you exposed to intense UV rays. 1 in 3 Brits were sunburnt in the UK last year, with rates rising each summer. Over 85% of malignant melanomas are caused by excessive sun exposure.
Tip: Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen before tee-off, wear a cap, and reapply suncream at the halfway point.
3. Warm Up and Stretch
Jumping straight into your round is one of the fastest ways to strain something. Around 70% of amateur golfers will experience a golf-related injury in their lifetime, with the lower back being the most common area affected.
Tip: Spend 5–10 minutes on light stretches and warm-up swings — it’ll improve your flexibility and your scorecard.
4. Snack Smart
Your body needs fuel to stay focused over 18 holes. Poor nutrition and hydration can cause fatigue, loss of concentration and muscle cramps — all common factors in mid-round drop-offs, especially in older golfers.
Tip: Pack easy-to-digest snacks like bananas, oat bars, or unsalted nuts. Avoid heavy meals or sugary quick fixes.
5. Don’t Play Through Pain
A niggle might feel manageable now — but it could cost you months off the course. 1 in 10 UK golfers report an injury that either required hospital treatment or forced them to stop playing for months. Many admit to ignoring early signs.
Tip: Listen to your body. If something feels wrong, rest — or get it checked out before it gets worse.
Health Cover – For When You Pull More Than Just a Shot
Whether it’s a pulled shoulder or a touch of sunstroke, private health insurance helps you get seen quickly — no waiting lists, just personalised care to keep you on the course. England Golf members now have access to discounted Bupa health insurance through Insured Health. Because some hazards need more than a sand wedge to escape!
